About Nakai Dental

Professional dental clinic in Kyoto with English support

Nakai Dental is a professional dental clinic equipped with the latest knowledge and technology, providing high-quality care under Japanese health insurance system.

Since our opening, we have welcomed many English-speaking residents of Kyoto who face language barriers when visiting a dentist. Our nationally certified dentists, dental hygienists, and reception staff are experienced in assisting English-speaking patients.

Your first visit will begin with a comprehensive consultation, including diagnostic imaging and other tests to accurately assess your oral condition. Please describe your symptoms and concerns in as much detail as possible.

We also provide separate consultations for advanced prosthodontic, endodontic, and aesthetic treatments that are not covered by the national insurance system.

While not all of our staff are fluent in english, we do our best to assist patients who are not comfortable communicating in Japanese.

We do not charge any additional fees for English language support.

Please understand that all such assistance is provided voluntarily and made possible through the sincere efforts of our team members.

Dental Treatment under Japan's National Health Insurance System

All fees for insured treatments and medications are strictly standardized by the government, meaning that the same procedure costs the same amount at any dental clinic nationwide.

If you live in Japan and hold valid health insurance, you can receive essential dental treatment with a much lower co-payment compared to private care overseas. However, because of these regulations, treatment is often divided into several shorter visits.

Since the system's goal is to "restore essential function for chewing," procedures that focus on enhanced function, prevention, or aesthetics (such as material upgrades for fillings and crowns) are not covered by insurance.

2. For Patients without Japanese Health Insurance

If you do not have Japanese health insurance, all treatments will be self-paid. This also applies if you forget to bring your insurance card. Even in such cases, our basic policy is to follow the principles of Japan's national health insurance system to ensure safety and transparency. If you have difficulty understanding explanations in English or Japanese, please bring an interpreter to every appointment.

  • Residents of Japan who are not enrolled in the national health insurance system
  • Individuals covered by their home country's insurance system

We generally follow Japan's national health insurance treatment framework. Please note that treatment procedures and systems may differ from those in other countries.

We also provide a full range of self-paid treatments. Consultations for these treatments are available by appointment (fees apply).

We provide scientifically grounded, internationally standardized care. Our specialists in prosthodontics, endodontics, implantology, and oral surgery work collaboratively to deliver advanced, evidence-based treatment.

5. Important Requests to All Patients

The following are general requests for all visitors to our clinic:

Please strictly observe your appointment time and the clinic's attendance rules. Patients who are repeatedly late or cancel more than twice will not be able to make further appointments.

When receiving treatment under Japan's health insurance system, please understand that specific national regulations apply.

Because insured dental treatment in Japan is highly standardized and cost-controlled, treatment methods may appear uniform. The system prioritizes efficiency and fairness.

Patients who wish to discuss treatment options in greater depth with the dentist may schedule a private consultation (self-pay).

If you request procedures outside the scope of the insurance system or treatments that are not medically appropriate, we may recommend referral to another facility.

Questions related to treatment can usually be addressed within your appointment time. Extended or special consultations may incur additional fees.

For safety and privacy reasons, we cannot accommodate personal requests unrelated to treatment (e.g., preferred forms of address).

Photography, recording, or filming inside the clinic are strictly prohibited. Please refrain from using mobile phones during treatment.

Patients who do not comply with clinic rules will be refused further treatment.

Any abusive, threatening, or disruptive behavior toward staff or other patients will be reported to security personnel and the police.
